Italy's Second Labels: A First-Rate Tasting

Italy's Second Labels: A First-Rate Tasting
Saturday, July 11, 2009 1:00-3:00 PM

Tenuta San Guido, Quintarelli, Massolino, Talenti, and Tenuta dell’Ornellaia: these producers craft some of the most collectible, desirable, and gorgeous wines in the world. But in addition to their iconic—and incredibly expensive—expressions, they also make more value-conscious wines that fall under the rubric of “Second Labels.” A second label wine derives from the grapes of younger vines, or it may come from fruit declassified from the producer’s flagship wine; however, when that second-label wine comes from the hands of Barolo’s Rocche dei Manzoni or Liguria’s Pigato master Bruna, it’s undeniably first-class. On July 11, join us for a tasting of second labels from some of Italy’s premier producers—including those named here. Led by an IWM sommelier, complemented by savory cheeses and offerings from IWM’s own salumeria, this tasting will give attendees the chance to see how second labels are anything but second rate.

Participants Receive:
• A “Taste of” seven different regional wines
• Complimentary sampling of Italian Salumi and Cheeses
• Wine Note Booklet featuring IWM’s proprietary writing

Wines to Make Your Summer Salads Sing

Wines to Make Your Summer Salads Sing
Saturday, July 18, 2009 1:00-3:00 PM

Hot weather, luscious vegetables, cold chicken, chilled pasta: summer calls for the delicious easiness of salad. It's quick, it's healthy, and it's simple-it's also difficult to pair with wine. On July 18, IWM's Studio del Gusto presents a tasting whose aim is to solve the salad conundrum. A knowledgeable IWM sommelier will lead participants through a tasty tour of summer salads complemented by spunky, fresh, and creative wine choices. Accompanied by salads created by IWM's own culinary team, this tasting will feature a Prosecco by Veneto's Col Vetoraz, some intriguing white wines from producers like Friuli's Fantinel and Piemonte's Ca'dei Mandorli, as well as summer wines that will surprise you--a Sandrone Dolcetto d'Alba, a Frecciarossa Uva Rara, along with other special summer-worthy red wines. Step outside the white wine box and start making those salads sing; it's only summer for a few months, after all.

Participants Receive:
• A “Taste of” seven different regional wines
• Complimentary sampling of Italian Salumi and Cheeses
• Wine Note Booklet featuring IWM’s proprietary writing

Pinot Noir, an Italian Love Affair
Pinot Noir, an Italian Love Affair
Saturday, July 25, 2009 1:00-3:00 PM

Pinot Noir: It's the grape so distinctive that it got its own movie. As Miles Raymond pontificates in Sideways, Pinot Noir "can only grow in these really specific, little tucked-away corners of the world. And only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it. Only somebody who really takes the time to understand Pinot's potential can then coax it into its fullest expression." On Saturday July 25, Pinot Noir will be the center of a special tasting in IWM's Studio Del Gusto. This fussy and famous varietal grows exclusively in Italy's North, and this tasting will focus on producers like Friuli's Movia, Alto Adige's Hofstätter, Piemonte's Rocche dei Manzoni and Forteto della Luja, as well as feature Argentina's Bodega Chacra and a Spumante from Bruno Giacosa. Complemented by dishes from IWM's own custom salumeria, this tasting will make even hard-core Francophiles think again about Italian Pinot. Bringing Pinot Noir and Italy together, this will be an affair to remember.

Participants Receive:
• A “Taste of” seven different regional wines
• Complimentary sampling of Italian Salumi and Cheeses
• Wine Note Booklet featuring IWM’s proprietary writing
