Hofstatter: Hyphenated Greatness
One of Italy's most striking winemaking regions actually belonged to the Austrians for most of its history. It wasn't until about a hundred years ago, in 1919, that Trentino-Alto Adige, aka Sudtirol or South Tyrol, as the Austrians still call it, became part of Italy.

Hofstatter Pinot Bianco Barthenau Vigna S. Michele 2004

One Alto Adige's best-kept secrets, the Foradori family have been winemakers since the time of their ancestor Josef Hofstätter bought this estate in 1891. The Hofstätter estate captures in microcosm Alto Adige's ability to accommodate a vast breadth of varietals-including Pinot Bianco, the grape behind their Barthenau Bianco. Pale yellow in color, this intriguing wine emits an aromatic nose of white flowers that is echoed on the medium-bodied palate and accented by subtle spice, honey notes, and a satisfying minerality. Drink 2006-2010.

Hofstatter Gewurtztraminer Kolbenhof 2005

In his ’05 effort, Hofstätter’s Gewürz is an evocative, sensuous, richly layered expression that revels in the grape’s signature lychee fruit, the intensity of which gives it the impression of a solo artist. Yet, it is more accurate to characterize it as an ensemble performer that headlines a supporting cast including mango, apricot, and tangelo. These fruits and extended finish are carried by a penetrating acidity, which both relieves and sculpts the wine’s density, heightening Kolbenhof’s stylistic sensibility.

Hofstatter Yngram 2000

While the Hofstatter estate privileges the growing of indigenous grapes, it nonetheless pays homage to Alto Adige’s international roots by cultivating several international varietals including the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Both varietals comprise the estate’s unique, velvety and dark Yngram. Dense, concentrated and interesting, Yngram holds an abundance of black currants, sweet herbs, raspberry jam and spices. Characterized by mouthwatering tannins balanced by a jaunty acidity, Yngram’s complex mineral finish sings, deliciously.

Hofstatter Pinot Nero Barthenau 2002

Hofstätter’s work with Pinot Nero is particularly esteemed, with the estate’s single-vineyard Barthenau bottling—the product of intensive clone research, crafted with a view to maximizing the cru’s distinctive terroir—holding benchmark status not only for Alto Adige but for Italy as a whole. The aging period comprises one year in small oak casks, followed by one year’s maturation in large casks. This limited-production Pinot Nero (1,500 cases) is undeniably Burgundian in both philosophy and temperament.
