Barbaresco 'Bricco Asili':
[cheh-(l)reht-to b(l)reek-ko ah-zee-lee]
The Ceretto brothers, Bruno and Marcello, are renowned as the most revolutionary producers of the Piemonte region. Bricco Asili was acquired as their first estate in 1973. It is here that they produce some of Piemonte’s most privileged Barbaresco, particularly the Ceretto Barbaresco 'Bricco Asili.'
The Ceretto brothers have never tried to change their Barolo or Barbaresco—innovation is the exclusive realm of the marketing department—but rather strive to perfect what comes naturally from the earth. Bruno and Marcello, the “Barolo Brothers” describe themselves as simili al punto che più diversi non potrebbero essere—so similar they could not be more different. While the reserved Marcello developed skills in enology and took control of production, dynamic big brother Bruno analyzed the business side of the wine world. It was Bruno’s innovative approach to marketing that brought attention to his sibling’s top-notch creations—a fresh new face for the bottlings caught the eyes of experts and wine lovers. Highlighting Roero Arneis helped keep Piemonte on the map in the 80’s when whites were all the rage and Friuli had captivated the world. The establishment of a distinguished literary prize for wine and food writing framed a grand image of Ceretto as a leader in and guardian of excellence in enogastronomy.
Ceretto Barbaresco 'Bricco Asili' is stemmed from a plot of 1.2 hectares with calcareous lush marl along the peak of a slope facing south-southwest. Grapes are fermented on the skins for 7-10 days in stainless steel with temperatures commencing at 30 degrees and ending at 26 degrees. Prior to release the wine is aged in small oak barrels for one year followed by an additional year bottled in the cellar. Asili Barbaresco is drinkable after 5-6 years but maintains its character for more than a decade.
